Documentary · 2026
A steel arm turns slowly above a field. What would our landscape look like if we cared for it again?
About the film
After the war, land consolidation turned scattered plots into large, straight fields. It produced plenty of cheap food, but soil, water, air and biodiversity are paying the price.
Draaipunt (“Turning Point”) follows a field that does things differently. From a single post in the ground, rings of crops grow that help each other. No pesticides or artificial fertiliser are used, and the farmer hovers above the soil on a long arm instead of driving heavy machinery over it. Researchers, designers and farmers show what happens beneath our feet, and who ultimately pays for our food.
Perhaps it simply starts again. With a post in the ground. A path. And a circle.

Draaipunt raises questions, which makes it a natural conversation starter. It works well as the opening of an evening with farmers, students, policymakers and consumers, followed by a discussion. Please note: the film is in Dutch and currently has no subtitles.

A steel arm turns slowly above a field of rings. Draaipunt asks what our landscape would look like if we cared for it again.
We have come to see the large, rectangular field as the Dutch landscape. Draaipunt follows a field that does things differently: rings of crops that help each other, without pesticides or artificial fertiliser. A playful and critical film about soil, farmers and consumers, and about who ultimately pays for our food.
After the Second World War, the Dutch landscape changed in a short time. Land consolidation turned scattered plots into large, straight fields, machines grew bigger, and artificial fertiliser made intensive farming possible almost everywhere. It produced plenty of cheap food. The downside is becoming ever more visible: soil, water and air are in poor shape, and biodiversity is under pressure.
Draaipunt takes the viewer to a field that does things differently. From a single post in the ground, rings of crops grow that support each other. No pesticides or artificial fertiliser are used, and the farmer hangs from a long steel arm above the soil instead of driving heavy machinery over it. Researchers, designers and farmers, including Floris Alkemade, Hanneke van Ormondt and Dirk van Apeldoorn (Wageningen University & Research), show what happens beneath our feet.
With a light but sharp voice-over, the film asks the question that concerns us all: what are you eating tonight, and who pays the bill? You, the farmer, the soil, or the generations after us?
